Some of you recieved a PTC time sign up last Thursday in our 1st graders mail. A few families did not return the time preference sheet, so I took the liberty of choosing a time for your family. If the time works for you, Fantastic! If the time does not work for you, jot me a note or email me to schedule a time that does work with your family's schedule.

Math Journal #1

April 14, 2014

We have completed unit 5 of ten units in our math series.  This is the first math journal that covers those units.  Due to curricular changes, we do not do all of the pages in this journal. We use these journals as a tool.  As you flip through the book, you will notice blank pages.  These are pages that we either skipped because they did not align with our current curricular expectations, or because we did a different activity to learn the concept, or your child was absent.   If you’d lik...

Author Visit

We really enjoyed our author visit from the local author Gordy Briley. We now have each of his books in our classroom for students to enjoy!

AuSable Institute

Dear Families,

 

Over the past few years, 1st graders have taken part of an amazing field trip to the AuSable Institute of Environmental Studies. The trip is an opportunity for 1st graders to participate in hands on learning and extends what we have been learning in the classroom already.

 

In the past, funds have been set aside so that there is no cost to families for this trip. We are not that fortunate this year. Due to budget constraints, the district is unable to help fund the tr...

Reading Month Final Week

We have been reading and celebrating the author Dr. Seuss this month as well as participating in the school’s Michigan Animals reading month festivities! We will be having a few fun days to cap off the celebration next week.

Monday 5/24 - Wear a  Michigan shirt (it can be a college shirt, or one for a town in Michigan,) Let’s show our MI pride. :-)

Tuesday 5/25- Character Creation (we will be sharing the Seussy characters that we create at home with our family)

Cold-Hot Reads

Cold-Hot Reads

We will be doing a cold fluency read every Tuesday on a new passage. Your student will then practice this passage and he/she will be timed throughout the week to see how “hot” they can get on a passage. Over the remainder of the school year we will be tracking their progress on a graph. Students will then be able to see how much they have grown with their reading fluency.

To administer a timed read:

1.     Use your phone, kitchen timer, or an analog clock with a secon...

100s Day

Hundreds Day

Our 100th day of school will fall on , February 13th. We will be celebrating being 100 days smarter with a few 100s activities. One of those ways will be to share the 100s Collections that you are putting together at home. The other way will be to work on creating a snack collection with 100 items. Please send in a snack  that is small in size. For example:

· Cheerios

· Raisins

· Peanuts

· M&Ms

· Cereal

· Pretzel sticks

· ZIPLOC Bags
